'There used to be a lot of talk about 'engaged' art before irony took over, 'engaged' meaning a humane, usually socialist stance made visible: irony is evidently a way of seeming clever about having no commitment. Rooney needs neither a political message nor the mask of irony.  His engagement is to humanity at large, his allegiance is to art at large; his delight is in what paint can do and how it can deliver, again and again, in so many different ways - what the imagination will conceive.   There is humour in this art and a great deal of love, and if we find it difficult to say whether the love is for humanity or art, or for the vivid personages and things he can make present in his pictures, that is just how it should be.'
