Following Art School in Sutton, where a fellow contemporary was Mick Rooney RA, Alan Smart started a career in advertising and design. In the early 1960s he moved to St Ives to become a painter. With a similar creative path and trajectory of Christian Chaize (another landscape artist exhibiting with Boécho) Alan honed impressive technical skills and ability within these commercial arenas and as with Chaize, later transitioned these skills to the altogether more esoteric discipline of fine art and self expression. There is no doubt that the time in Cornwall was pivotal - the Cornish landscape and its multifarious beauty has had a profound impact on his work and ideas.  Alan is adept at capturing the stillness of moments in time, both in the landscapes as well in these quietly beautiful domestic mise en scènes where the influences of his TV and backdrop-painting days perfuse. There is much poetry in these captured scenes that is truly magical from this gifted painter.
